⚠️ WHAT ABOUT CHEAP GENERIC SPRAY GLUE?

This is where we'd be careful.

There are plenty of inexpensive spray adhesives available online and from hardware stores.

The problem is that not every spray adhesive is designed for automotive headliner applications.

Your car interior can experience:

☀️ Extreme heat

🔥 High temperatures inside the vehicle

🌡️ Large temperature changes

🚗 Vibration and movement

The adhesive needs to cope with those conditions.

Saving $10 on glue isn't particularly useful if you're forced to remove your entire headliner and do the job again.

🧵 THE GLUE IS ONLY HALF THE JOB

One of the biggest misconceptions about headliner repair is that the adhesive is the solution to everything.

It's not.

The preparation of the headliner board is just as important.

When the original headliner starts sagging, the foam backing behind the original fabric has usually deteriorated.

That means you can't simply:

Spray glue → stick old fabric back → done.

The old fabric and deteriorated foam generally need to be removed.

The board needs to be cleaned and properly prepared before installing new fabric.

A good headliner recovery is:

Get one of those stages wrong and the finished result can suffer.

🧴 HOW MUCH HEADLINER GLUE DO YOU NEED?

This depends on the vehicle and the size of the headliner.

As a general guide based on our own experience:

Ute / smaller headliner

Approximately 1 × 500ml can

Sedan

Approximately 2 × 500ml cans

Wagon / larger headliner

Approximately 2–3 cans

Larger or more complicated headliners may require additional adhesive.

Sunroof panels, pillars and other components can also increase your requirements.
